Alpe Adria Grado return

The Alpe Adria cycle route is one of the most popular routes in Europe. It is chosen by almost every Polish enthusiast of traveling by bike outside the country. No wonder - she is beautiful, relatively easy to drive through, safe and has very good logistics of the route itself.

The journey itself along the Alpe Adria route is relatively simple. This is the hardest part, what happens before the start and after reaching the finish line – getting and transporting the bike to Salzburg and back from Grado.

Everyone faces a dilemma: How to get there with a bike and how to get back? Choose trains, FlixBus or private transport?

That's why I created a separate guide, which collects all these options in one place.

You can get from Poland to Salzburg in several ways.

Directly

By private bus – this is usually the most convenient option, but also one of the more expensive ones. The downside is this, that carriers most often run on Saturdays. For some people this will not be a problem, but if you plan to stay longer in Italy after the tour, go to Venice, to the Garda River or visit other places, such a deadline may not be very flexible.
By FlixBus – usually cheaper, although this carrier still has mishaps related to the transport of bicycles, so it's worth having an emergency plan.
By night train - That's possible, but the bike must be packed properly.
By car – you leave your car in Salzburg, and after the tour you have to come back from Grado to get them.

With a transfer

By trains (the simplest way) via Vienna – there are several direct connections from Poland every day with bicycle parking spaces.

How to return from Grado after completing the Alpe Adria route?

Once you reach Grado you have the following scenarios.

1. Return to Salzburg from Grado

For these, who left their car there. You can use:

private buses,
FlixBus from nearby cities,
trains, although there is no direct connection to Grado.

2. Return to Poland with Grado

Directly:

private buses,
FlixBus from nearby cities (that is, almost directly)

With transfers:

FlixBus via Vienna, Budapest or Prague.
Grado – Trieste ferries add variety to your journey, make it easier to get to Trieste

Each variant has its limitations: bicycle parking reservations, rules for transporting bicycles on trains and buses, transport limits, various carrier regulations, variable ticket prices or the need for sufficiently long transfers.

How to plan your journey to and from the Alpe Adria route?

It takes a really long time to work through all the variants. I know, because I went through it myself and I regularly help other cyclists plan such trips. While preparing the guide, I dug through dozens of carriers' and timetables' websites.
