By bike in the Italian Apulia. Valley of Itria – in the land of trullos

South of Italy by bike

Ewa Świderska Apulia

What do you know about Puglia? I thought while going to the south of Italy in December "for housesitting" (about which I wrote in the previous post) at the very end of the Italian boot.. Because although I have been associated with Italy for over 30 years, I have reached Puglia only now. Capital of the region – Bari has always reminded me of Queen Bona Sforza, and the region with stone houses and a conical roof, that is, Trullo. And then there's the Baroque, which reigns in the architecture of many cities, especially Lecce.

I was lucky, that I was there, where it was "the most trulli" and the greenest, i.e. in the Valley of Itria (Itria Valley by bicycle blog post). For a month, As soon as time and the December-January weather allowed, I rode a bike and explored the nooks and crannies of the region. And I fell into it up to my ears. Let me take you on a bike tour around Valle d'Itria. But first things first:

Where is the Apulia region located?

Apulia is figuratively speaking “Italian shoe heel”. A narrow and long province surrounded on three sides by the sea.

Where is the Valley of Itria??

The greenest part of the Apulia region lies in the highlands between Bari and Brindisi. The greenest part of the Apulia region lies in the highlands between Bari and Brindisi “bounce” some from the sea 10-15 km and press the pedals well – The valley of Itria lies at an altitude 250 – 400 meters above sea level between the towns of Alberobello, Ostuni, Locorotondo, Cisternino i Martina Franca. Vineyards and olive groves stretch as far as the eye can see – among them characteristic stone houses with a conical roof, i.e. Trullo.

Alberobello

I've approached Alberobello three times. It is the most famous town in the region, who has heard of Apulia, it probably associates – it is a city-monument from the Unesco list, is famous for its buildings - trullo houses with a conical roof, that make up entire districts here. 3. Coastal route: Bari – Mola in Bari – Polignano a Mare – Monopoli – Brindisi

Najprościej jechać wzdłuż morza i taką trasę zapewne wybierze większość cyklistów.

Italy by bike - Apulia and the Salento peninsula. Mini guide – Ewcyna 25 June 2022 - 08:57

[…] Monthly winter stay in the Itria valley, famous for its olive groves and trullo houses (Itria Valley by bicycle blog post) in the region of Apulia (Puglia) in the very south of Italy, it only whetted the appetite for cycling in the region. I've already made up my mind, that I will return there in the spring - because the day is longer, the weather is kinder and the landscapes and architecture (Baroque reigns and the building material is the famous local sandstone) and how trullo houses taken out of a fairy tale stole my heart. Not to mention the emerald color of the water in the sea (my post on the topic HERE. […]
