..Want to spend a pleasant relaxing day, enjoying the peace and beauty that the landscapes of Western Sicily offer? the Marsala cycle path is what you are looking for!..
That's how the typical commercial would start but in this case I would second that. It wasn't even marked on my app (shame mapy.cz) so came with a surprise when I was cycling along the coast from Marsala to Trapani in western Sicily. The Stagnone cycle path is about 8 km long, but as it crosses the evocative landscape of the saline with its windmills, to multicolored tanks and the pretty islands of the Stagnone lagoon is to me one of the most beautiful cycling itineraries in Italy. And in April it was absolutely quiet. If it was a bit later in a year I would add a nice bath in the shallow water of lagoon having tens of flying kite's in view. Go there, especially at sunset!

Guess where was I the previous weekend?!! Yes! - in Bologna, at the CYCLING TOURISM fair, i.e. Fiera del Cicloturismo!

I came there (flew) looking for Italian cycling inspirations, but also the desire to meet people who have a similar passion, take advantage of workshops and lectures. I was very tempted to come here - for myself, but also for you. I don't know if I told you that I want to spend the next few weeks traveling around Italy to create a knowledge base about bicycle routes in this beautiful country? So I say 🙃.

By a thousand coincidences I managed to get there and then I got lost seeing the endless options.. I've seen a lot in Italy, I've ridden many routes and beyond, but I didn't expect to see - on paper and virtually - such an offer for two-wheel travel enthusiasts. Each region has several, a dozen, several dozen bicycle routes, of which I want to select the most important ones. I also acquired some practical information that will be useful to Poles.

Companies producing bicycles and organizing trips, as well as representatives of several foreign destinations, unfortunately without Poland, were also present at the fair. What's more, probably the most important thing - lots of workshops on every topic you need, lectures, prizes - including separate prizes for women.

See at least a little of it in the photos. I would love to have a similar event in Poland!

It's been a month here in Sicily and I still am not done with the island. Another month in sight.
.."The winds will blow however they want" my mother used to say after the weather forecast, and here in Sicily this spring they want to blow strongly and severely. There is no end in sight!
.."Hurricane gusts in western Sicily reached over 150 km/h in gusts at the Trapani Biagi airport, where extensive damage occurred" I read the news after a night enriched by a quick rescue operation - adding weight to the tent, strengthening the poles fighting with the wind at midnight. I was relieved that I didn't spend the night somewhere closer to the airport.
Then it came the dust from Sahara and covered the sky and my thought completely.
The famous panorama of Cefalu during my short visit doesn't look familiar.
I wasn't amazed by many things here - too much trash all over, too many wandering dogs - but the people are amazingly friendly, the landscapes diverse, ancient history round every corner. The smell of spring flowers and lemon in the air. The Holy Week traditions add to this unique experience.

This summer, I revisited the scenic Vistula Spit- or "Vistula Spit"- in Poland - a slender stretch of land nestled between the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Starting off in Gdansk, I pedaled along the EuroVelo10, the Baltic Sea route, stretching all the way from Germany to the doorstep of Kaliningrad.

Here's the twist: opting for the Vistula Spit detour is like choosing the 'adventure' option. Enter the R10 Vistula Spit connector, where the Vistula winks at the Baltic. This is where fun starts. I swapped my bike for a stint on the Swibno-Mikoszewo river ferry, turning a simple crossing into a mini-adventure. The 50 km path is a cyclist's nirvana: secluded, lined with fragrant pine forests, and ripe for berry picking in the summer or mushroom foraging come September. Did both. The sea might play hide and seek, but as you near Krynica Morska, prepare for jaw-dropping views of the Gulf of Gdansk. Foodies, rejoice! The route is dotted with spots to indulge in the freshest, most delectable smoked, marinated, or fried fish – a true seaside treat on two wheels.

You pedal right up to the Russian border (because that's as far as you go), and then either spin back or hop onto a ferry from Krynica Morska to Frombork for more two-wheeled wonders.

But wait, there's more! Under Poland's "Zanocuj w Lesie" (Camp in the Forest) initiative, you get to camp in designated wild areas within Polish forests, including a spot on the Vistula Spit. My treasured camping site, though challenging to reach (hellos, sandy terrain!), rewards you with a serene night under the stars, accompanied only by the soothing whispers of the waves.

What do bicycles and drinking water have in common

What do bicycles and drinking water have in common in Puglia? For several years, the Apulian Aqueduct Cycling Road (Cycle route of the Apulian #Aqueduct) cycle route has been used. Taking advantage of the last beautiful and sunny days before the January weather breakdown (January and February are the coldest and wettest months in southern Italy), I went to check out this latest, main bicycle investment in Puglia. Two years ago I rode part of it, but it was only a few km.

The current bicycle and pedestrian route uses the infrastructure of the aqueduct, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century to bring water to Puglia from the mountains of the Basilicata province. The currently completed fragment, completely separated from car traffic, stretches in the heart of the famous trullo houses and olive farms of the Itria Valley (Valle d'Itria) - a total of about 20 kilometers and, as they say, it is the first part of a larger route with a length of over 450 kilometers, of which over 150 are to be in Puglia. The entire project is to be completed by March 2026.

In all this, the most important thing is... water or rather the lack of it. I will quote some information from its official website: ..”Puglia, with an area of 20,000 square kilometers between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, is a region divided between sky, sea and land. However, the nature of the soil does not allow water to be collected or reserved. Neither limestone nor porous karst can hold water, which percolates downwards and concentrates at great depths, where it encounters brackish and seawater. "
The Acqueduct was being built between 1906 - 1915. The water in Puglia comes mostly from it and there are still fountains in the cities.
I use them personally.
I can't wait for the project of the #Ciclovia to be finished.

More flashbacks of 2023 bike touring - Matera, Italy. One of the oldest cities in the world renown for rock-cut urban core, the dwellings inhabited over centuries. Once called a city of terrible poverty and described as “the model of the misery” of southern Italy still in the 50-ies now one of the main tourism spots - yes, the view of the cliff is amazing. My second time there.

So happy to have been able to return to trullo land in Alberobello area for festive season. Even though I have spent here so much time this architectural beauty doesn't stop to amaze me. Seems a fairy tale land. Some of these trullos are a few hundred years old.

Let's hope there will be lots to amaze us in the coming 2024! Happy New year!
